After completing the trip in Turkey and Georgia I landed in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Stayed overnight at Almaty airport. In this video, I have shared information on Almaty Airport to Almaty city bus, fare, basic Kazakh words for tourists, Magnum supermarket near Sayahat which can be a good option to buy vegetarian food in Almaty & Almaty metro.
Almaty airport to city centre bus / Sayakhat bus station
Bus #92 connects Almaty Airport with the city centre. Bus fare is 150 Tenge (30 INR in September 2018). The bus takes around half an hour to reach Sayakhat bus station. Sayakhat is a place from where you can get buses to reach almost anywhere in Almaty. Almost 150 metres away is Raiymbek batyr Metro station and 900 metres away is Alma Ata 2 train station. There are many shops around Sayakhat.
Almaty Airport: WiFi, Mobile Sim, Restaurants
Highspeed WiFi at Almaty airport is free for everyone without any time restrictions. However, there is a clause. You need to have a local Kazakh number to use the WiFi. There is a store on the 1st floor (departure) from where you can buy a local sim. Though the price they charge is higher than the city shops. There is also a restaurant inside the airport building. After you enter the airport building, you can find it on the extreme right corner.
Vegetarian food for backpackers in Almaty city
I purchased vegetarian food from Magnum supermarket. There are many options available. Watch this video to see how the supermarket looks from inside. I purchased ready to eat vegetarian things for around 1600 Tenge (315 INR) which was sufficient for me for the next 2 days. So if I eat 3 meals a day, this would come around 50 Rs per meal. Isn’t that cheap!
Almaty Metro fare
Pay a flat fare of 80 Tenge to travel anywhere in Almaty metro. I took the metro from Raiymbek batyr Metro station. You can see the process of buying the token, entering inside the metro station and catching the metro in this video.
Watch this video to see some interesting interactions with friendly Kazakh people.
