I visited Belgrade in September 2020 and took a guided tour to explore the popular tourist attractions in the downtown. I started with Knez Mihailova, Kalemegdan (fort), Republic Square, National Museum, Moscow hotel, Nikola Tesla Museum, Farmer’s market, Temple of Saint Sava, Slavia, etc. It also covers an Indian restaurant in Belgrade city centre.

How many European countries are in Schengen area!

The Schengen Area comprises of 26 countries that have agreed upon the allowance of free movement of their citizens within the Schengen area. Of the 26 countries that are bound by the Schengen agreement, 22 are part of the EU (European Union), and the other 4 are part of the EFTA (European Free Trade Association).

Schengen area almost covers the majority of the European countries, except for the United Kingdom and countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Ireland which are soon to be part of this agreement. However, some countries are not part of the European Union like Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Lichtenstein but they still belong in the Schengen area and support the free movement policy.

Documents for Schengen Visa

Every country has its own set of rules for giving the visa. It is highly recommended to contact their embassy/consulate for the latest information regarding Schengen visa fee and other details. Still, to give a rough idea, these documents are required to apply for the Schengen visa:

  • Visa Application Form
  • Photographs (Click for photo specification)
  • Valid Passport (having atleast 6 months validity)
  • Flight tickets (Roundtrip)
  • Cover Letter (Purpose of visit and itinerary)
  • Travel Health Insurance Policy (coverage of 30,000 Euros)
  • Proof of accommodation (Hotel reservation or a formal invitation letter from a resident of a Schengen country)
  • Sufficient funds for your trip (varies from country to country)
  • Bank Statement (preferably past 6 months)

How to get Schengen Visa from India?

You can get a Schengen Visa from the embassy of the country that you plan to visit. You’ll need to submit all the documents which serve as your application for the same. The best time to apply for Schengen Visa is at least 15 days before the planned visit to Europe. Also, check with the embassy for appointments.

Here is the list of documents needed for Schengen Visa. For reference, I am mentioning the documents needed at the Netherlands Embassy/Consulate, but more or less every country which accepts Schengen visa has the same requirements. Also, I have shared the downloadable copies of different application forms needed for Schengen visa.




  1. Valid passport
    # Must be valid for at least 6 months
    # Passport must also have at least 2 blank pages to affix the visa
    # Passport should be submitted with all the old passport booklets
  2.  Visa application form, duly filled and signed at two places(column #37 and in last) by the passenger
  3.  Consent form
  4. Authorization form
  5. Travel History form
  6. Two photographs
    # Size 3.5mm x 4.5mm
    # Matt finish
    # 80% face coverage and white background
  7. Personal Covering Letter addressed to The Visa Officer, Embassy of Netherlands, New Delhi
    # mentioning duration of visit
    # purpose of visit
    # expenses clause
    # Details of all Applicants with name, passport number on plain paper
  8. NOC from Employer, if employed
  9. Travel Insurance
  10. Return Confirmed ticket or Itinerary covering all the sectors
  11. Confirmed hotel bookings (with hotel Name, Address, Telephone no and email Id)
  12. Original updated bank statement for last 6 months with bank seal and signature from the authorized person from the Bank
  13. Income Tax Return for Last 3 years
  14. Salary slip last 6 months

How to plan a budget Europe trip 

    1. Choose the countries which have cheap transportation and accommodations. Tourist Helpline recommends choosing Central Europian countries.
    2. Take help of online travel agencies like Skyscanner, Kayak, Momondo, etc. to know about the cheapest flights
    3. Prefer to travel by budget airlines like Smart Wings, Easyjet, Wizz air, Ryan Air, etc
    4. Stay in hostels than hotels. Get cheap hostels at hostels.com, hostelbookers.com & hostelworld.com
    5. Hitchhike & travel for free. Europe is relatively safe for Hitchhikers. Blablacar is another good option to travel.
    6. Get food at discounted rates from Supermarkets like Albert, Billa, etc
