My 8-days trip to Bali

So here’s a brief about my trip to Bali which lasted for 8 days. If you’re a budget traveller then this is a must read! I have shared my inputs based on my experience on Flight tickets, Hotels and transportation in Bali.

BALI FLIGHTS: Why I didn’t take Air Asia flight from Bali!

I had booked AirAsia flight which cost me 7,500 Indian Rupees (One way) with an option for cabin luggage only. My primary reason for booking AirAsia flight was that it was cheap and well within my budget for travel and secondly I didn’t feel the need to carry too many clothes with me for the trip. Shorts and vests are enough if you wish to roam around Bali. If you enjoying shopping then probably you can go for Malindo Air for the return journey which allows a maximum of 20 Kilograms for check-in and 7 Kilograms for cabin baggage (Price: 9000 INR). I opted for this option because I shop extensively. You needn’t pay extra 3,500 INR for AirAsia check-in when you can purchase clothes worth the same amount. In Bali, clothes are very cheap!

HOTELS IN BALI: Why I stayed in resorts and 4-star hotels!

I made my hotel bookings through Booking.com and will always recommend this website. Here you can book hostels at prices ranging from 100 to 1,200 INR and hotels from Rs. 800 to 35,000 per night. In the end, it comes down to the luxury or the comfort you wish to have. I would suggest, book a luxurious hotel in Ubud and opt for guest houses in Kuta or Seminyak. The reason behind this is that Ubud has some great hotels and resorts to offer! You can enjoy the beauty, nature and the silence of the place. After all who wouldn’t want to simply lay inside the pool with a beer in hand? I had booked Kadiga Villa which is a 4-Star property. It was fabulous and the hospitality was at par with the services provided. I stayed at the place for 2 nights and I really enjoyed a lot! In India, it’s hard to find this sort of luxury at an affordable price of 4000 INR per night with a private pool and complimentary breakfast. No doubt, there are cheaper options available but it all comes down to the level of comfort you require. In Kuta or Seminyak, it’s not advisable to spend so much money on hotels because there are so many other things to do apart from beaches and parties. I stayed in Kuta for a period of 5 days in D’gaduh suite. It cost 1,100 INR per night with an access to the pool. But it was definitely worth it! It was located in the main market with Legian just a kilometre away and the staff was also very friendly.

TRANSPORTATION IN BALI: Why I was said ‘NO to Uber’!

Uber, Grab and Gojek apps are banned in Bali so don’t use them to get a taxi from the airport. If another driver sees you using the Uber app, he may stop you and won’t allow you to go. This happened to me twice. There are hoardings all over the city saying that Uber and Grab are banned. The best way to get Uber is to step outside the hotel, move a distance of at least 100 metres and then use the app. You’ll find taxi drivers mostly outside the hotels and airport. It’s not really easy to get an Uber taxi at the airport. I had booked my taxi from rideaways.com by paying a hefty sum of 13.15 USD. The local taxis are very expensive.

Sharing my experience, I had booked a ride from Kuta to Ubud with Uber. It was showing 1,20,000 IDR which is supposed to be around 600 Indian Rupees. But when I started getting into the cab, a local driver stopped me and politely asked me to leave the Uber cab. The Uber cab left immediately and then I was left with only one option, to book a local taxi. They charged me 30,000 IDR which is around 1,500 Indian Rupees. After heavy bargaining, I closed the deal at 2,50,000 IDR. Stil, it was more than double to what to what Uber was offering. So if you’re planning a ride with Uber or Grab, then try not board from a near a hotel.




Get Tourist Drivers license in Bali to explore the ‘Real Bali’

The best way of travelling in Bali is to hire a scooter. Indians need an IDP (International driving permit) for driving but it’s really hard to get one in India. So the best way is to get a temporary Balinese driving license (Tourist Driver’s License) from the police station in Denpasar within a day. Preferably, check with your hotel or homestay. They will know exactly, how you can get there. The cost for the same comes around to be 30 USD. That’s one way, how the local police make some extra money. You will just have to fill in a Multiple Choice Form (with answers right next to you!). Bring a passport size picture and the required money for fees. The license is issued to anybody between the age group of 18 to 70 years. The rent for the scooter is 60,000 IDR (around 270 Indian Rupees) per day and it’s even lesser on weekdays. I got it for 80,000 IDR (357 Indian Rupees) including petrol. Petrol is very cheap in Bali at around 38 Indian Rupees per litre.

Caught by Bali traffic police! (Driving without license or helmet in Bali)

If you get caught by the traffic police for driving without a license or helmet, over speeding or being blamed for an offence you didn’t perform, do not panic. Some Policemen will do their best in scaring and threatening you. But keep your calm and be friendly to them. That will undoubtedly help you in the situation. Convince them with your sincerity and modesty. They would just charge a fee and let you go. You may have to pay between 10 to 30 USD. I’m sharing this because such an incident happened to me. I didn’t have a license and had to around 500 Indian Rupees as a bribe.

Bali itinerary for 5 days

Where did I stay in Bali

I stayed at Anvaya Beach Resort which is one of the best-rated properties by the guests. It is located in Kuta and has a private beach. For those looking for Indian food, here is a good news. I was told by the resort officials that they have got an Indian chef. Being a vegetarian, I enjoyed the Indian dishes like Masala Dosa, Poha, Parantha, Chutney, etc. in the breakfast. As on 31 December 2017, it was rated 9 out of 10 on Booking.com. The stay was arranged by the Indonesian Tourism authority.  The room tariffs depend on the type of room you book. I stayed in the Deluxe room which was available for 7,000 INR (approx) on different online portals. Their ‘villa with a private pool’ costs about 98,000 INR for one day.

How to get visa for Bali

Indonesia provides a visa-free entry to most of the nationals who wish to visit Indonesia for tourism purpose. This visa is available for 30 days and can’t be extended further. So, Indian citizens do not require a visa to visit Bali. Many people have asked about the documents needed to get Bali visa in the facebook group of TouristHelpline. To answer them, just arrive at the Bali airport and show your passport to the immigration officer. You will get the entry. Although its recommended to have documents like return flight tickets & hotel bookings or other accommodation proof. The visa-free movement in Bali for Indians is similar to visa-free access to Nepal and Bhutan. The only difference is, Indians don’t require a passport to visit Nepal & Bhutan, whereas you need a passport to enter Bali, Indonesia.

Budget stay in Bali

Bali is a perfect place for budget travellers. Hostels in Bali are generally available for 250 Rupees (approx.) for one person/night. However, while writing this report I saw a few hostels were available for as low as 120 Indian Rupees. (Click this link – Bali Budget hostels). These hostels, guest houses are readily available in all over Bali. However, Ubud is a paradise for budget travellers. That is the reason lot of budget hostels are available in Ubud. You can also get cheap hostels in the most happening area of Bali, i.e. Kuta and even Denpasar, the capital of Bali.

Many people have asked how to get budget hotels or hostels in Bali in the TouristHelpline facebook group. The best way is to choose the area first and then go the online travel agencies like Booking.com, MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, etc… and check the ratings given by the users, not the agency. I would advise using the filters to on such portal. For eg., you can filter the results on the basis of budget, ratings, facilities, etc.

Vegetarian food in Bali

Being a vegetarian is not a problem in Bali. I am also a vegetarian and found a lot of options to eat and drink. There are a lot of local vegetarian dishes like Tipa cantok, Daluman, Veg Nasi Goreng (fried rice), etc. Check my videos and Instagram for more details and their pictures.  Getting Indian food in Bali is also not a problem. As the number of Indians tourists in Bali is quite huge, there are a lot of Indian restaurants in Bali. Google will help you to find them.



Tourist sim in Bali

Getting a prepaid sim card in Bali is very easy. Just pay the cost and get the pre-activated sim from any sim card dealer. You don’t need to give any documents to get the sim as no registration is required for taking a prepaid Sim card in Bali. I used Telkomsel and I was pretty satisfied with its performance. It worked well even in Nusa Penida (island). Another popular network is ‘XL’. Generally, a prepaid sim/tourist sim will cost 200,000 IDR in Bali. One of the sim vendors was selling a Telkomsel sim for 200,000 IDR with 7GB of internet data and no talk time. One Indian Rupee (INR) equals 210 Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), as on 31 December 2017.

Internet and free WiFi in Bali

Free WiFi is available in most of the restaurants, cafes & hotels in Bali. The speed is good for sending a WhatsApp message or uploading a picture on your Instagram. So, probably you won’t even need to purchase a sim. Although, your prepaid sim can be uploaded with various Internet data packs. While booking your hotel/hostel make sure they offer WiFi range up to your bed because many of them offer free WiFi only in their lobby or dining area.

Local transportation in Bali

Bali does not have a good public transport system. You won’t find public buses in all the areas. Bemo, the local minibuses are available on limited routes. Your hotel staff can guide you to use a Bemo.

The worst thing I experienced in Bali was the traffic jams. As it was an organised group trip, we were given a bus for the whole trip. We actually wasted a lot of time getting stuck in the traffic jams. Only two-wheeler users were at the advantage. I suggest hiring a two-wheeler to explore Bali. This way, not only you will be able to dodge the traffic jams but also experience the independence to explore places on your own.

How to rent a bike in Bali

A motorcycle or scooter is available for rent for 70,000 IDR for 24 hours. You just need to show your Indian driving licence, passport and pay the rent in advance. They will note down the passport and driving licence details and handover the motorbike’s key to you. Watch this video for more details.

Do we need an International driving license to rent a bike?

Yes, a valid International driving license is recommended to hire a bike or scooter in Bali. Actually, it is mandatory to have an international driving license for driving a motor vehicle outside of your country. Some countries enforce this law very strictly whereas some don’t. According to Mr Arpan, a member of Tourist Helpline group who has spent a significant time in Bali – it is advisable not to hire a bike without a proper International driving licence or permit. There is a hefty penalty for this as per local laws. “I have seen many people made to spend hours in the police station “negotiating” their release and made to pay 200 USD because they didn’t have the International driving license.”

Bike taxi is called Ojek in Bali. Ojek is probably the cheapest way to travel in Bali. They are like auto rickshaw or tuk-tuk, where anyone can approach them to travel from one place to another. There are on-demand Ojek services offered by Grab and Gojek. Both the operators have their mobile app. Download them to book a bike taxi, just like you do to call an Ola or Uber taxi in India. Balinese Massage and Kecak dance at Uluwatu : Day-4 in Bali

A trip to Bali is incomplete without experiencing the traditional Balinese massage, spa and the famous Kecak dance drama. On the last day of my Bali trip, I visited Uluwatu, GWK cultural park and a massage & spa centre. This was the fourth day of my trip. Before this, I went on a day trip to Nusa Penida which is famous for its pristine beaches and water activities like snorkelling.

The day started with a 2-hour massage and spa at Bali Orchid Spa. There are a lot of other massage centres in Bali. The Balinese massage rates depend upon the products and duration of the therapy. For your convenience, in this video, I have shared the cost of massage and Spa I had.

World’s tallest statue at GWK Culture centre

After the spa, I went to the GWK culture centre. GWK is Garuda Wisnu Kencana (Garud Vishnu Kanchan in India). It is said that the under-construction statue at GWK cultural park will be world’s tallest statue after its completion. With the total height of 120 meters, It will be taller than New York’s Statue of Liberty. We had lunch at the Jendela Bali Restaurant which is located inside the cultural park. You can also buy souvenirs from GWK cultural park. I bought many gifts for my friends and family from this place. For me, the good thing was, I could use my Indian bank card to make the payment. So no need to carry the local currency. Watch this video for more.   Uluwatu was the highlight of the day.

Uluwatu Temple and Ramayana fire dance

Uluwatu was the highlight of the day. After GWK cultural park we reached Uluwatu temple in the evening. It is a famous Hindu temple in Bali. Beware of the monkeys. Our guide, Mr Dewa warned us and told that they are infamous for snatching eatables, cameras and even spectacles. So be careful. Although during our visit, there was a ceremony in the vicinity and all the monkeys went there for food. Uluwatu is another place in Bali to see the beautiful sunset. But the best part of Uluwatu is the famous Kecak dance. It is Balinese dance and music drama. The artist presented Ramayana – a Hindu epic through their energetic performance. For me, the one-hour long presentation was full of excitement, especially the white Monkey’s (which probably is Hanuman) exuberance.

A day trip to Nusa Penida, Bali : Snorkelling, Beaches & Nasi Goreng

This video is about my visit to Nusa Penida, one of the most exciting and scenic islands around Bali.  I visited two beaches in Nusa Penida –  Kelingking & Toya Pakeh. It took us around 30 minutes from Sanur beach to Nusa Penida island in a speedboat. The ferry price is about 4,00,000 IDR which equals to 1,900 Indian Rupees approximately. After that, we went to Kelingking beach which was pronounced as Klingking beach by our guide and people from Indonesia Tourism promotion authorities.

Kelingking beach

After reaching a particular point near the Kelingking beach, the scenery became surreal. The sea water was so clear, so blue… It was out of this world. There is a track to reach the beach, but it is quite dangerous. There is a board which warns tourist to go on that path on their risk. I went half way and came back.

Vegetarian Nasi Goreng

Now before we could start water activities in Nusa Penida island, It was already lunchtime. I had vegetarian Nasi Goreng at a local restaurant on the way. Nasi Goreng is Indonesian fried rice and quite a popular dish. Usually, it is served with meat, but I ordered a Vegetarian one. It cost 30,000 Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) which equals 143 Indian Rupees.

Snorkelling at Nusa Penida

After lunch, I reached Toya Pakah beach, another famous beach on Nusa Penida. I think it is more famous for activities like Snorkelling. We went on a Snorkelling trip, again on a speedboat. It hardly took 10-15 minutes to reach Gamat Bay, the place known for Snorkelling and other water activities. Our snorkelling instructor informed that a snorkelling trip from the Toya Pakah beach costs about 250,000 IDR for one person. The trip duration is 1 hour which includes travelling time from Toya Pakeh to Gamat bay. Overall the actual snorkelling activity lasts for 30 minutes which is really fun.

Bali – Rental bike, Ubud & Hinduism (Day 2)

On the second day of my Bali trip, I visited Ubud and Tanah Lot. Also got a chance to have a glimpse of the Balinese Hindu culture. Thanks to Mr Dewa, our guide who is also a monk in Bali. He shared a lot of information about the culture and lifestyle of Balinese people. I found there are a lot of similarities between Indian and Balinese culture.

Ubud

Once an offbeat tourist destination in Bali, Ubud is gaining popularity. This place is for those looking solitude in a natural environment. In the quick visit to Ubud, Mr Dewa took us to Pulina Bali coffee plantation. You can get a panoramic view of the terraced paddy fields, which have gained recognition from UNESCO because of its uniqueness. I also visited the Ubud market after that.

Tanah Lot

In the evening I visited the famous Hindu temple of Tanah Lot. It is a major tourist spot in Bali thus can be found in almost every tourist’s checklist. It is said that the sunset view from Tanah lot should not be missed. Although I found there are many other places in Bali which offer a better view of Sunset. So for me, this place looks quite overrated.

Bike rentals in Bali

In this video, I have also shared information on how to rent a bike in Bali. I approached two bike rental agencies in Ubud (Monkey forest road) and found that a 110 cc Honda Vario is available for 70,000 Rupiah for 24 hours. The rent may vary from agency to agency.

As the title “First day in Bali: Vegetarian food and resorts” says, this video is about the vegetarian food I had on the first day of my Bali trip. Also, you’ll come to know about Anvaya Beach resort, the place where I stayed.

Vegetarian food in Bali

I was served Daluman as the welcome drink in a restaurant where we stopped for lunch. After that, I had Tipat Cantok, a local dish of Bali made up of vegetable salad, peanut sauce and Rice cake. I ate Nasi Bakar Jamur in the dinner at the Gabah restaurant in Kuta, Bali.

Malaysia Airlines : Delhi to Bali via Kuala Lumpur

This is the first video of the Bali travel video series. I travelled from Delhi to Bali with Malaysia Airlines. The itinerary is divided into two legs. Delhi to Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia Airlines- MH191

Just like most of the international flights, MH191 was also a late night flight from Delhi. We took off from Delhi’s IGI Airport to reach Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. It was a comfortable flight of 5 hours. The aircraft was Airbus A303, a widebody aircraft. I enjoyed the in-flight entertainment, comfortable reclining seats and relished the vegetarian food. Although it would be better if the flagship carrier of Malaysia can offer more variety of food for vegetarians. The aircraft landed at KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) in the next morning.

Kuala Lumpur to Denpasar, Bali: Malaysia Airlines- MH715

After a layover of 3 hours, my next flight was MH715 to Denpasar (Bali) in Indonesia. It took another 3 hours to reach Denpasar, Bali. Unlike the previous one, It was not a widebody aircraft. The leg space was relatively less. But rest all the services were same.

Bali: Visa on Arrival

After reaching Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport I met all other group members with whom I was going to travel for the next 3-4 days. The first formality after landing was to get the visa. Indonesia offers visa on arrival for Indians. The best part is it does not cost anything to get the visa. Unlike Thailand, where until December 2017 the visa on arrival fees was 4000 Indian Rupees (2000 Baht), Indonesia visa is totally free. So it was a simple process of getting the visa. We just stood in the queue and got our passport stamped. So no need of getting Indonesian currency, Rupiah (IDR) before coming to Indonesia. After getting the visa and customs formalities done, you can use the ATMs or the Money exchangers to withdraw IDR.
