The Himalayas are not far from Delhi. Just drive for 250 kilometres up in the North and you reach the Shivaliks, the lower Himalayas. However, this time, I wanted to explore something new, far from the crowd of popular hill stations like Shimla or Mussoorie. So, I decided to visit Nepal on my recently purchased bike – Royal Enfield Thunderbird. Here comes my log of a bike trip from Delhi to Nepal, which I did in August 2013.
From Delhi the nearest border town of Nepal is Mahendranagar. Drive straight towards the east for 340 kilometres and reach Banbasa border. For me, it took around 8 hours by following this route.
The most popular overland crossing between India and Nepal are Sunauli-Bhairawa, Raxaul-Birgunj, Kakarbhitta-Siliguri, and Jogbani-Biratnagar. All these border points are easily accessible by popular means of transport. Our list mentions about 22 border check-posts on India-Nepal border which tourists can use for crossing. Have a look.
Personally I have used Banbasa-Mahendranagar, Raxaul-Birganj & Jogbani-Biratnagar on my trips. The picture shown on the top of the article is from the Raxaul-Birganj border checkpost. I have done road trips on a bike from Delhi to different places in Nepal via Banbasa crossing. Most of the crossings are old styled and lack modern facilities. Also, corruption is a problem. Officials may harass you if you do not carry proper documents. Never forget to carry the important documents required to enter Nepal with own vehicle.
