Tashanta : Last Russian village on Mongolian border (Day 11)

Tashanta is the last Russian village on Chusky Tract. It is located on the Mongolian border. This village offers some of the most incredible views of the Gobi desert. I visited this village on the Day-11 of my hitchhiking trip to Russia. Dima and Tanya took me to Tashanta in their car. Watch this video to know who are Dima and Tanya and how I met them!

Tashanta: Russia-Mongolia border

Tashanta border can be crossed overland if you hold a valid Mongolian visa. I wish I could cross the border and explore the sprawling landscapes of Mongolia. I had to catch my flight from Omsk to Delhi just after a few days. Omsk is almost 1600 kilometers away from Tashanta. As I was on a hitchhiking trip, there was no certainty of time. So I came back with Tanya and Dima to Kosh Agach to buy some souvenirs for my family.

ALTAI MOUNTAINS : UNEXPLORED RUSSIA : ONGUDAY (DAY 10)

This is the Second video of Day-10 of my Russian trip in which you will see me exploring the Altai Mountains, the unexplored part of beautiful Russia. I managed to reach Onguday with the help of a lovely elderly couple (watch this video). After that, I got a lift in another car from Onguday to Geyzernoye Ozero, a place near Aktach. I stayed with Dima and Tanya in a log hut in Geyzernoye Ozero. We all paid 500 Rubles each for a night. Interestingly that was the coldest night of my trip. The temperature dipped to almost -10-degree Celsius.

Hitchhiking on Chusky Tract : Barangol to Onguday (DAY 10)

Today was the 10th day of my Russian trip. A day before I reached Barangol from Gorno-Altaysk. Zhenia and Andrey gave me a comfortable stay at the ‘Crown of Katun’ resort, Barangol. Zhenia took me to a short hike to the River Katun. It was so mesmerizing to be there. After some time I came back on the road to start Hitchhiking on Chusky Tract. Hitchhiking in Russia : Not easy, sometimes (Day 9)

Hitchhiking in Russia is not easy sometimes. This is what I learned on the Day 9 of my Russian trip. Although Hitchhiking is full of uncertainties and that’s the beauty of traveling this way. I have met a lot of wonderful people while hitchhiking in Thailand, Malaysia, Czechia, Austria and my home country India. I also had ‘not good’ experiences while doing so. In this video, you will see how I got stuck in Barangol, Altai Republic. How did I get rescue and who were the angels. This experience taught me never to lose hope.

Chusky Tract : Offbeat Russia (Day 9)

On the 9th day of my Russian trip, I started my journey from Gorno-Altaysk to Chusky Tract which is comparatively offbeat in terms of tourism. Andrey, a local hosted me for a night at this home. Watch this video to see how is Andrey house and how does a residential area in Gorno-Altaysk looks. He took me to the city centre to help me buy some essential things for my trip. He also helped me purchase medicine from a local pharmacy. This was the first time when I bought medicine out of India, without doctor’s prescription.

What is Chusky Tract

The road from Biysk to Tashanta (the last Russian village bordering Mongolia) is called Chusky Tract. It Is a traditional route which connects Russia with Mongolia. It is said that Chusky Tract had a great trade significance in ancient time, probably like the Silk route. It passes through the beautiful vistas of Altai mountains. The great philosopher and painter Nicholai Roerich took this course on his 6-year long journey from Himalaya to Altai in the 1920s. I recommend reading ‘Altai-Himalaya – A travel diary‘ written by him.

How to reach Chusky Tract

Bus: There is bus service from Novosibirsk to Gorno-Altaysk and Kosh Agach. The distance between Novosibirsk and Gorno-Altaysk is 990 kilometres.
Train: There are trains from Novosibirsk to Byisk, the starting point of Chusky Tract.
Air: There is a small airport in Gorno-Altaysk.

Hitchhiking in Russia (Day 8) To Gorno-Altaysk

Today was the 8th day of ‘hitchhiking in Russia’ trip. After a short visit to Alex and Marina’s apartment in Byisk, I started to hitchhike for Gorno-Altaysk, the capital town of Altai Republic. The total distance between Gorno Altaysk and Byisk is 108 kilometres. Thanks to Alex and Marina who dropped me on the outskirts of the Byisk town. I always choose to start hitchhiking from a point outside of the city. There are more chances of getting a lift for a long distance if you stand outside of a city or town.

Best time for hitchhiking in Russia!

The weather condition was not favourable. It was 2-degree Celsius in Byisk. The bone-chilling winds were making me sick. Already I was not keeping well for past three days. This was my first time experiencing Siberian winters. Although it was just Autumn at that time.

Couchsurfing in Gorno-Altaysk

This trip was giving me a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the beautiful people in Russia. Like other days, I was helped by many people. I reached Gorno-Altaysk in the evening where I was received by Andrey, another Couchsurfer. I stayed in his place for that night. This Couchsurfing experience was different from all previous ones in Russia. Andrey’s house was not an apartment. I was suffering from a severe headache. Initially, I had planned to stay at his place for two days, but something happened, and I felt so energetic and refreshed. Gorno-Altaysk for travellers

Gorno-Altaysk is the main town or the administrative capital of Altai Republic, a Russian province. The Altai Republic is different from Altai Krai, which is another province of Russia. It shares borders with Mongolia and has a different culture than other Russians. Hitchhikers can use Gorno-Altaysk as a place to stay or shop because this is the last Russian town where you will get all the modern facilities and gadgets. It is a beautiful town situated in the lap of Altai Mountains.

How to reach Gorno-Altaysk

Bus – There are direct buses from Novosibirsk, Barnaul, Byisk to Gorno-Altaysk.
Car – Rideshare app Blablacar is popular in Russia. I found many trips to Gorno-Altaysk. This was my backup plan #2.
Train – There is no train station in Gorno-Altaysk. Nearest railway station is Biysk which is 108 kilometres away.
Aiport – There is a small airport in Gorno-Altaysk located near the Highway M-52 (Novosibirsk to Tashanta, Mongolian border)
