We all have seen Japanese anime and cartoons from our childhood and had a dream to visit Japan once in life to feel and see that country which made our childhood great. I also had the same dreams. My dream came true in September 2018 when I applied for Japan Visa and got it approved. I finally got to visit in October 2018 and spend 12 days in Japan.

Flight fare from India to Japan

Japan Flights from Delhi and Mumbai usually range from Rs 40,000-50,000 (Return fare). So I had to find a cheaper option. I searched for the flights with layovers. While doing so I also considered the layovers should be in those countries whose visa could be obtained easily being an Indian.

Leg 1 | Delhi to Singapore

Initially, I was thinking of travelling via Hong Kong. This was Air Asia flight costing 11,000 INR connecting through Kuala Lumpur. But this time I wanted to travel with some airline other than Air Asia. So I took flight with Singapore Airlines. The ticket cost me 14000 INR with a 16 hours halt in Singapore. This was going to be my second experience in Singapore. Check my travelogue to know how I travelled on a budget for 8 days in Singapore and Malaysia.

Singapore gives free transit visa for 96 hours if you have a valid Japanese visa.

Leg 2 | Singapore to Hong Kong

The second leg of my Journey was from Singapore to Hong Kong which was also with Singapore Airline in morning. Another wonderful journey with Singapore Airlines.

Immigration in Hong Kong

On landing, I went through smooth Immigration in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Visa is also free but you have to do one Pre-Arrival Registration before arriving in Hong Kong and it is valid for 6 Months for Multiple Journeys. I had only one day stay in Hong Kong so I decided to take rest.

Leg 3 | HongKong to Tokyo with ‘HongKong Express’

Next Day I went to Hong Kong Airport to catch my flight to Tokyo. I booked Hong Kong Express which is a budget carrier like Air Asia. Flight ticket from Hong Kong to Tokyo was 3300 INR.

After landing in Tokyo

I landed on Narita Airport of Tokyo. This time I didn’t use my ATM card but I had US dollars. I purchased 72 hours metro card of Tokyo metro from airport and combo Airport Shuttle Express which cost me 2400 Japanese Yen (100 Yen = 65 INR). Mobile Sim card in Japan is expensive so I didn’t buy it.

I took the Airport Shuttle to reach the City Centre and from there I took the Tokyo Metro to reach my apartment. But after reaching the apartment I didn’t find the apartment’s owner. I was stranded there for around 3 hrs. Only after that I got the keys. This apartment cost me 7000 YEN for 3 Nights for 2 People.

2nd day in Tokyo

Next day I decided to visit the most touristy place of the Tokyo city with Shibuya crossing and Shinjuku Area. This is very famous and also known as the Times Square of Japan. I used the metro to travel all over Tokyo as I had 72 hrs Tokyo Metro pass. Infact, I did not use the bus at all in the whole of my Japan trip. In morning we went to a nearby indian Restaurant and had Lunch as the day started pretty late for me. Lunch in the Indian restaurant cost around 800 YEN.

3rd day in Tokyo

3rd Day in Tokyo Started with a visit to Odaiba Island of Tokyo City which is famous for Robotics Museum. Views are similar to Manhattan, New York. They also have their own ‘Statue of Liberty’. To visit this island you need a separate ticket of the futuristic train which operates on this island and costs around 320 yen one-way.

In the night I went to see the Tokyo Tower which was mesmerizing In it’s Orange colour. While withdrawing money, I got the worst ever exchange rate. I used Mizhuo ATM.

4th day in Tokyo

Today was our last day in Tokyo City. In Evening I had to leave for Hamamatsu so I decided to go to Akihabara district in Tokyo by using Tokyo Metro. It was the main Anime and Gaming district in Tokyo. I don’t remember which restaurant I went to but that was the best chicken I had in my life.

My experience in Japan’s Bullet Train

Now was the time to take the world’s famous ‘Bullet train’. Its official name is Shinkansen. That day due to an unfortunate mishappening all train from Tokyo to South Japan got delayed by 2 hours. But after reaching Hamamatsu, to my surprise, Japan Railways refunded 3380 Yen from my total ticket cost 8090 Yen. It was a great way to compensate the passengers for the delay.

In Hamamatsu, I stayed with one of my friends. We travelled with his local Japanese friend who actually had travelled in India. He was very keen to know more about India. I have recorded the conversation in this video in which he shares his thought about Indians.

The same day we went to some of the tourist places in Hamamatsu like Airforce Museum and Limestone Cave. At night we had dinner in one of the Japanese Restaurants. I learnt how to hold the chopsticks the right way. Food in Japanese restaurants for dinner costs around 700-800 Yen

We are fascinated by the Japanese, Korean and Chinese language characters as they are totally different from all other languages. So I learnt a few of these words from my Indian friend who has been living in Japan for 2 years. There are around 20,000 Japanese alphabets which are called as Kanji in the Japanese Language.

2nd day in Hamamatsu

Next 2 days in Hamamatsu were kind of rest days for me because I had to travel for another 10 days. So I decided to only go for a walk around the Washizu Village. I was staying in Washizu which is a small town near Hamamatsu. While walking I learnt about Japanese Culture and why japan is so clean.

I always like to explore the Supermarket in the country which I visit. So at night, we went to explore a supermarket. I wanted to see what all things are sold to eat as I heared that Japanese also eat Octopus. There is a famous shop in Japan which is called as ‘Daiso’ which has all things for 100 or multiple of 100 Yen.

After resting for 2 days at my friend’s place it was time to head for the next destination – Kyoto. Kyoto is the old Capital of Japan. I had already experienced the Bullet train so I decided to take a cheaper option which was the local train. There were around 4 stops between Hamamatsu and Kyoto. This journey gave me the actual experience of an average Japanese’ daily lifestyle. It took around 4hours to reach Kyoto from Hamamatsu.

I stayed in a Capsule hostel

Next adventure which was on the way was experiencing a Capsule hostel. However, Capsule Hostel are nowadays available everywhere in World but they started in Japan. So it was worth to stay for 1 night in this hostel. They are generally more expensive than the normal hostels. I paid 2360 Yen.

Experiencing the cultural capital of Japan – Kyoto

I reached Kyoto around 1 pm. After taking rest for around 2 hrs I decided to go and explore the cultural Capital of Japan. I was literally stunned to see the cleanliness on the streets. They were actually cleaner than those I saw in Tokyo. Kyoto is famous for the Temples and Shrines. After searching for the places to visit in Kyoto, I visited a hilltop, suggested as #1 attraction on Google. I never saw such clean streets in my life. I also tried the green tea Ice cream for 350 Yen. In Japan, you can find everything with Green Tea in it.

Next day I was left with only half day for Kyoto. I had to leave for Osaka thereafter. So I decided to visit the Bamboo forest and Fushimi Inari Shrine. Fushimi Inari is the place where you will find the largest number of shrines together in the world. Bamboo forest was also breathtaking. Major tourist places in Kyoto are accessible by the Metro. Japan is very famous for different types of trains and I observed that in Kyoto.

Kyoto to Osaka

In the evening I had to catch a local train to reach my host’s place, located on the outskirts of Osaka. Train from Kyoto to Osaka costs 580-700 Yen depending on the destination you want to go. I had to change 2 trains to reach to my host’s place. I reached around 10 pm and I felt very safe while walking in the streets of Japan.

Next day I went to Osaka castle which was in the main city. I had to take a JR train and metro. I had to walk of around 1.5km to reach Osaka castle from the metro. The walk itself very great. Osaka Castle is a great place to visit. I am not a fan to visit castles and temples. Entry fee for Osaka castle was 600 Yen. So instead of going inside the castle, I took a 20 minutes session of Samurai classes which was for 2000 Yen. I recommend every tourist to take Samurai class. I enjoyed it a lot.

Osaka is like Mumbai of India whereas Tokyo is Delhi and Kyoto is Varanasi. So had to enjoy the nightlife of Osaka. I went to Dotonmbori Street which is the best street to enjoy Nightlife of Osaka. Here you can shop, walk, take photos, eat or dance or whatever you want! It is so big that you can’t cover it in one night. It is parallel to the Dotombori River.

Next day I went from my host’s house to a hostel. My host was able to host me for only 2 days. I slept for the whole day as in night I had to meet one of my Indian friends in Osaka. We decided to roam around Dotombori Street whole night from 10 pm to 5 am. He showed me a different Japan which a tourist can’t see. Around 3 am I forgot my wallet somewhere. I lost all my Bank cards and around 150$ which was upsetting me. But during the entire journey, I travelled with an Indian friend. He helped me. Though by chance I had $50 left in my pocket.

Osaka to Hiroshima

After returning to my hostel at around 7 am I had to get some sleep. I had planned to go Hiroshima from Osaka around 12 pm. I took the metro to Kyoto Main Station to catch the train to Hiroshima. You can get tickets directly to Hiroshima from Metro Station also. In this journey, I had to change 5 trains and it cost 5600 Yen otherwise for the same route Bullet train costs 13000 Yen. Local trains took 7 hrs to reach Hiroshima. It was also a memorable journey as I saw different types of trains. I am a big fan of trains. After getting off at the Hiroshima main station, I took a tram to reach my hostel. My hostel was in the outskirts of the city. So it took another 1 hour to reach. It was already 8 pm. At this time the streets become deserted in Japan.

You would have seen Japanese homes in anime. I got a chance to stay in one of them. The hostel I stayed in was a Japanese Home which was converted to a hostel. While staying there It felt like I had become Japanese.

Next morning I went to see the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome. Yes, it is the same place where the world’s first Atomic Bomb was dropped. Now watching the city does not even feel like an Atomic bomb was detonated here. But thinking about that day just gave me goosebumps. I was approached by a volunteer guide whose father died due to radiation of the Bomb. She was so humble and polite throughout the tour that I won’t forget anything she told about Hiroshima city and the Atomic bomb.

In Evening I had a flight back to Hong Kong. I took Airport Shuttle Bus to the Airport and reached just 30 minutes before departure. But the great staff of HK Express allowed me to board the plane. So I did not have to go back to Tokyo which saved my time and money. Flight from Hiroshima to Hong Kong by HK Express cost me 3300 INR.

Free Night stay at HongKong Airport

I reached Hong Kong in Night at around 10 pm. So decided to sleep at the airport only & not paying for the Hotel. Next morning I took the bus N21 to reach Tsim Tsa Tsui Street and booked a hotel room in Chungking Mansion which is ‘Mini India’ of Hong Kong. Even the Hotels are owned by Indians and Pakistanis. In the evening I went to see the Skyline of Hong Kong. I never saw such a large skyline before. Next day in the afternoon I had to leave for Macau as I had booked my return flight to India from Macau.

Next day around 11 am, I left my hotel towards the Macau Ferry Terminal. Walked for 1.5KM in search of fridge magnets. I generally collect from every country but I was unable to find it there. HongKong to Macau Ferry cost between $150 HKD to $170 HKD. I took the ticket for 160$ HKD and immigration for HongKong is done in that building itself. The ferry took around 1 and a half hour to reach Macau. Macau Immigration is done after you deboard from the Ferry. Macau visa is free for Indians on arrival. I had whole evening and night to explore as Macau is popular for its nightlife.

After enjoying Macau for a short period of time I took Uber from somewhere in Macau to Macau Airport which cost 50 MOP. MOP is Macanese Pataca which is Macau currency which is equal to Hong Kong Dollars. I slept from 12-6 at airport and morning did check in and took my flight back to Jaipur from Macau via Bangkok. It cost me 9500 INR. The layover was for 3 hrs.

How much money did I spend on this trip?

I spent around 75,000 INR on this 18-days long trip. This cost includes flights, visa, hotels, food, Sightseeing and other charges.

My 8-days trip to Bali

So here’s a brief about my trip to Bali which lasted for 8 days. If you’re a budget traveller then this is a must read! I have shared my inputs based on my experience on Flight tickets, Hotels and transportation in Bali.

BALI FLIGHTS: Why I didn’t take Air Asia flight from Bali!

I had booked AirAsia flight which cost me 7,500 Indian Rupees (One way) with an option for cabin luggage only. My primary reason for booking AirAsia flight was that it was cheap and well within my budget for travel and secondly I didn’t feel the need to carry too many clothes with me for the trip. Shorts and vests are enough if you wish to roam around Bali. If you enjoying shopping then probably you can go for Malindo Air for the return journey which allows a maximum of 20 Kilograms for check-in and 7 Kilograms for cabin baggage (Price: 9000 INR). I opted for this option because I shop extensively. You needn’t pay extra 3,500 INR for AirAsia check-in when you can purchase clothes worth the same amount. In Bali, clothes are very cheap!

HOTELS IN BALI: Why I stayed in resorts and 4-star hotels!

I made my hotel bookings through Booking.com and will always recommend this website. Here you can book hostels at prices ranging from 100 to 1,200 INR and hotels from Rs. 800 to 35,000 per night. In the end, it comes down to the luxury or the comfort you wish to have. I would suggest, book a luxurious hotel in Ubud and opt for guest houses in Kuta or Seminyak. The reason behind this is that Ubud has some great hotels and resorts to offer! You can enjoy the beauty, nature and the silence of the place. After all who wouldn’t want to simply lay inside the pool with a beer in hand? I had booked Kadiga Villa which is a 4-Star property. It was fabulous and the hospitality was at par with the services provided. I stayed at the place for 2 nights and I really enjoyed a lot! In India, it’s hard to find this sort of luxury at an affordable price of 4000 INR per night with a private pool and complimentary breakfast. No doubt, there are cheaper options available but it all comes down to the level of comfort you require. In Kuta or Seminyak, it’s not advisable to spend so much money on hotels because there are so many other things to do apart from beaches and parties. I stayed in Kuta for a period of 5 days in D’gaduh suite. It cost 1,100 INR per night with an access to the pool. But it was definitely worth it! It was located in the main market with Legian just a kilometre away and the staff was also very friendly.

TRANSPORTATION IN BALI: Why I was said ‘NO to Uber’!

Uber, Grab and Gojek apps are banned in Bali so don’t use them to get a taxi from the airport. If another driver sees you using the Uber app, he may stop you and won’t allow you to go. This happened to me twice. There are hoardings all over the city saying that Uber and Grab are banned. The best way to get Uber is to step outside the hotel, move a distance of at least 100 metres and then use the app. You’ll find taxi drivers mostly outside the hotels and airport. It’s not really easy to get an Uber taxi at the airport. I had booked my taxi from rideaways.com by paying a hefty sum of 13.15 USD. The local taxis are very expensive.

Sharing my experience, I had booked a ride from Kuta to Ubud with Uber. It was showing 1,20,000 IDR which is supposed to be around 600 Indian Rupees. But when I started getting into the cab, a local driver stopped me and politely asked me to leave the Uber cab. The Uber cab left immediately and then I was left with only one option, to book a local taxi. They charged me 30,000 IDR which is around 1,500 Indian Rupees. After heavy bargaining, I closed the deal at 2,50,000 IDR. Stil, it was more than double to what to what Uber was offering. So if you’re planning a ride with Uber or Grab, then try not board from a near a hotel.

Get Tourist Drivers license in Bali to explore the ‘Real Bali’

The best way of travelling in Bali is to hire a scooter. Indians need an IDP (International driving permit) for driving but it’s really hard to get one in India. So the best way is to get a temporary Balinese driving license (Tourist Driver’s License) from the police station in Denpasar within a day. Preferably, check with your hotel or homestay. They will know exactly, how you can get there. The cost for the same comes around to be 30 USD. That’s one way, how the local police make some extra money. You will just have to fill in a Multiple Choice Form (with answers right next to you!). Bring a passport size picture and the required money for fees. The license is issued to anybody between the age group of 18 to 70 years. The rent for the scooter is 60,000 IDR (around 270 Indian Rupees) per day and it’s even lesser on weekdays. I got it for 80,000 IDR (357 Indian Rupees) including petrol. Petrol is very cheap in Bali at around 38 Indian Rupees per litre.

If you get caught by the traffic police for driving without a license or helmet, over speeding or being blamed for an offence you didn’t perform, do not panic. Some Policemen will do their best in scaring and threatening you. But keep your calm and be friendly to them. That will undoubtedly help you in the situation. Convince them with your sincerity and modesty. They would just charge a fee and let you go. You may have to pay between 10 to 30 USD. I’m sharing this because such an incident happened to me. I didn’t have a license and had to around 500 Indian Rupees as a bribe.

5 days in Malaysia for 15000 Rupees

In July 2017 I travelled first time out of India. It was a budget trip to Malaysia. I spent 5 days in Malaysia for 15000 Rupees. My trip started from Vishakapatnam from 13 July to 18 July in 2017. During the total trip of 5-days and 4-nights, I visited Kuala Lumpur, Malaca, Langkawi & Penang. I got the eNTRI visa which cost 1,400 INR. For accommodation, I booked the hotels through agoda.com and used Malindo air and Skybus to travel inside Malaysia. This trip cost me around 15,400 INR, which is excluding food expenses and return airfare from India. This is how you can say its a budget trip to Malaysia.

Malaysia: Five days itinerary

Day 0

Night flight to Kuala Lumpur from Vishakapatnam at 9.30pm

Day 1

We reached Malaysia (KLIA 2). After completed our immigration process (See how is the immigration process at KLIA2 airport), we went to KL Central by sky bus (cost is 10 MYR – Malaysian Ringgit). I booked all tickets on online. After KL central we took KTM metro to Batu caves directly. From Batu caves, we went to the hotel located in China town by KTM metro. After refreshment, we visited Hindu temple, china temple, KL tower, twin tower and night market. Then we came back to the hotel at late night.

Day 2

Early morning we went to visit some temples and market. After 10 am we left Kuala Lumpur for Malaca by bus from TBS Station (Fare was 10 MYR, Duration 2.30 hours). We reached 1.00pm in Malaca after took rest. After that, we visited Malaca city, tourist places and night market. Then we started our journey at 11.30pm back to Kuala Lumpur airport by bus.

Day 3

At 3 am, we reach KLIA-1 airport. Our flight to Langkawi took off at 7.30am and we reached there at 8.30 am. Then we went hotel by UBER taxi. After refreshment, we took rental-bike (24 MYR for 24 hours). Then we rode to Langkawi sky bridge and Oriental village (sky bridge combo ticket cost is 55 MYR). Finally, we came back to our hotel at 9.30 pm. After getting refreshed we visited the night market.

Day 4

Early morning we went to the beach and Langkawi jetty. After the visit, we came back to the hotel at afternoon. Then we started our journey to Penang. From the Langkawi jetty, we took a ferry to Kuala Perlis and then a bus to Penang. We reached Penang at 6 pm. After refreshment, we visited some places and night market.
I recommend giving more time to Langkawi than other places in Malaysia.

Day 5

Next morning, after having our complimentary breakfast we started our day-trip to Street art, Down House, Museums and some other historical places. We also did shopping. After lunch, we checked out from our hotel and started return journey from Penang airport to Kuala Lumpur. Then Kuala Lumpur airport to Vishakapatnam. We reached Vishakapatnam at 9.30 pm. This way I completed my 1st international trip.

My budget trip to Singapore

I recently travelled to Singapore and Malaysia in just Rupees 15,000 for eight days! This includes travelling expenses in both the countries. The return Air ticket from Delhi cost Rs. 12,000 and visa fee was 1,854 INR for Singapore and 1,400 INR for Malaysia. Read my travelogue : “My budget trip to Singapore” for details.

How to get Malaysian Visa

My travel plan – Delhi – Singapore – Malaysia – Delhi

My travel plan was – from Delhi to Singapore Air Asia Flight (6000 INR) and return from Kuala Lumpur to Delhi (6000 INR), and I travelled from Singapore to Malaysia in a Luxury bus for just 1000 INR.

How did I travel in Singapore

During the whole trip, I never took a taxi. Taxies are just a rip off in Singapore. I never asked the price as I knew it would be hell expensive. I travelled all the places by Metro and Bus. They both were also very expensive but much cheaper than a taxi. I travelled for two days on Metro. In total 12 metro tickets and 2 bus tickets cost me around 22 Singapore Dollar (1100 INR). It is slightly tricky to understand Singapore metro map. Just ask anyone present there or the officials. They are helpful. I would recommend you tourist card for 20 SGD (1000 INR) which is valid on both bus and train, but you have to give a security deposit of 10 SGD (Singapore Dollar) (500 INR), and that is only refundable at few stations.

How I got Singapore Visa in 2 days

Sentosa Express

Sentosa Express ticket is for SGD 4 (200 INR) which is for both ways. TIP – It’s free to come back to the mainland by express. You can walk to go to the Sentosa Island from Mainland.

How to reach Singapore City from Singapore Airport?

Air Asia operates from Terminal 1. If you land on Terminal 1, then you will have to take Skytrain which is free of cost to the Terminal 2 or Terminal 3. From there you can catch the Singapore Metro. By Metro, you can reach just anywhere in Singapore.

Where did I stay in Singapore and Malaysia?

Whenever I do budget travelling, I prefer to stay in hostels. They are cheaper than hotels and also offer an opportunity to meet other backpackers from around the world. My first destination was Singapore where I stayed in ‘RuckSack INN Hostel’ for 2400 INR for three nights. I booked this hostel before leaving India from Goibibo site combined with flight, so I got some extra discount. I slept for 8hrs at Kuala Lumpur Airport as my layover was 13 hours. In Kuala Lumpur, I stayed at ‘Explorers Guesthouse’ which cost me 1480 INR for 3 Nights.

What did I eat in Singapore and Malaysia?

Being a Non-Vegetarian I had so many choices, but in a foreign country, it is difficult to understand what to eat. My favorite food in Singapore was chicken roll which I bought for 7 SGD (350INR) near the Merlion Statue Bridge. I like it so much that I came back in the night again and tried a different flavor. On the day-2, I visited an Indian restaurant in Little India which just ripped me off with a bill of 14.20 SGD (700 INR) for rice, chicken and Lassi.

Water is costlier than anything!

I bought water bottles 4-5 times in Singapore, which was a huge mistake. A 1.5-liter bottle of water costs 3.30 SGD (175 INR) in Sentosa Island. I always forgot to refill my water bottle.

I got Singapore dollars before going to Singapore. I used Bookmyforex. com and I got a rate of 48.7 INR for 1 SGD.

In this trip, I met two wonderful people whom I would like to mention about surely. In Singapore, I met Peter De Keyser who was from Belgium. He also sent me a postcard from Singapore as I forgot to post it to myself. In Malaysia, I met a Swedish train driver.
